At the northern edge of the city, in an abandoned borderland, an investigator arrives in search of an object assigned by his superiors. He is soon murdered by an unknown assailant, his body left by the roadside as a crowd draws near.
The people here have never seen an elephant. They have only heard that herds once existed in the South, and in the North long ago. They want to ask this urban outsider what an elephant looks like, whether he could take them to see one. Yet no matter how they handle and turn over the corpse, it offers no response. In their imagination, the elephant is a speculative object — its size, weight, and smell indeterminate. It might be transparent, able to fly, even devour humans. They fear its danger and strangeness, yet long to behold and possess it, willing to transgress moral boundaries to piece together its form.
There are no elephants here — as if echoing the proverb, “Is there an elephant in the room?” As for whether there are elephants in the North, the people of the North are still seeking for an answer.
